Kellie's Castle, Batu Gajah Perak

Kellie's or Kelly's Castle
My baby in front of the abandoned castle

View all 9 photos...
On the way back from Rush's wedding in Ipoh, we discovered this abandoned construction in Batu Gajah and decided to stop and take a look inside. Entrance fee was 3 ringgit for adult.

Long story short, Kellie's Castle was built by a Scottish planter called William Kellie Smith. He built the castle for his wife. The reason he built the castle was similar to the reason why Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal.

Smith went for a short trip to Portugal in 1926. He died there of pneumonia. His wife was still in malaya, heartbroken. She decided to pack and return to Sctoland. She sold Kellie's Castle to a British company called Harrisons and Crossfield.

Kellies Castle was never to be finished. It became a ruine with many legends. Legend of the ghost of Smith wandering through the ruins. Other legends were off secret underground tunnels. But apart of the two known tunnels, none were ever found. But after over eighty years, the Malaysian government refurbished the house in 2000.

Kellie's Castle memang cantik....memang teringin nak pergi, tapi tak berkesempatan lagi....

Kellie's Castle is indeed a magnificient building taking into consideration a building which was built outside Scotland . William Kellie Smith who hails from Kellas in Scotland had a great plan of building a castle in the then Malaya using labourers from South India ( Tamil Nadu ).I first laid my eyes on this building when I was 15 years old. At that time , this castle was seen as a derelict and to some ,an 'eyesore' and a remanant of the famed Scottish planter.Since my father was a planter who worked for the British plantation company - Harrisons&Crossfield , he decided one day that I should venture into some of his company's estate properties to view and appreciate its Gothic and Armenian architecture instead of spending my time lazing around in a lonely planter's bungalow in Tronoh while waiting for the LCE results to be announced.
So, one Saturday afternoon after our spicy afternoon tiffin,he took me to visit the famed 'Ladang Kinta Kellas' in Batu Gajah-a quaint town 30 minutes drive from Tronoh. First, he showed me the board indicating tthat he property was owned by H&C. What caught my eyes was the manager's name. The name read :Manager: Nicholas. I told myself that it is amazing to see a 'Mat Salleh' still managing the plantation as many of them have retired , shot by the infamous CT's during emergency or left the country as Malaysia was being Malaysianised and it was a rule of the thum that the plantations be managed by 'Oreng Kito or Malaysians'
My father-a' run of the mill 'told me that 'Nicholas was indeed an 'oreng kito' a Malaysian Indian with a Mat Salleh's name.I had a good laugh before proceeding to the castle. There I saw the replica of the movie 'Psycho' and his haunted house facing both of us.It was such an eerie sight that I wanted to leave the place immediately. Father stopped me from doing so and gave me a brief run down of the history surrounding the famed building.I was suprised that he knew so much about this Scottish planter and how he treated his workers during his hey day in the then Malaya.Father regretted that nothing was done to maintain the building as he knew that this building could attrrist for its looks.
Today, after almost 28 years , the building is well maintained and has attracted many tourists from abroadIt has also become a never to miss spot for photographers and budding designers who bring their models here to photoshoot.
Kellie's old friend , Mr.Alma Baker is peacefully resting at God's Little Acre in the heart of Batu Gajah where other white planters , ex British soldiers and English residents are burried. Recently , I found out my uncle's old manager and close friend , Mr.William George Huntsman of Buloh Akar Estate is also buried here.He passed away on the 27th of August 1960. I would recommend our present generation to visit Batu Gajah and learn more of our colonial past.
